Very good. A fan of Lou Reed since Transformer, a fan of VU since about '74. As such I love Reed's work, his lyrics - now in the hands of others - really do shine here. Each artist treats his words and melodies with all due respect and, on occasion, put the songs in a quite different context. Covers don't always work (The Stranglers version of Walk On By is perhaps the greatest cover of all time), but often a failed cover reflects a song that simply doesn't lend itself well to being done by others. First things first: The Stranglers are still a seriously powerful force in terms of musicality, record sales and selling out venues in or outside of the UK. That said, their most successful years of 1977 to 1982 are extensively covered here, featuring walkout stay-away singer/guitarist Hugh Cornwell, and too their strongest, most creative material.
Yes, this is yet another Stranglers compilation, this time entitled "All The Best" which, in fairness, is clearly not the case. Essentially, this is an apparently random grouping of songs taken largely from the band's hugely successful six year period at UA, with some oddities standing in for pieces you might expect to find here. Having fervently bought the previous five or six incarnations/evolutions of this game, I have to say I'm massively disappointed with this year's effort. Leaving aside the farcical pre-release/release, ignoring for now the enormous shortcomings of the pre-release beta version, I shall concentrate only on the final release. The glitches are still present - creating notes can be done only after the game breaks down and then restarts; actual matches inexplicably freeze before crashing, and there's an incident rate of about 80% in relation to goals scored in the 44th and 89th minute, far too regularly to e considered realistic.
