In a world of SLRs where perfectly engineered glass is common, and even cheap lenses are very sharp, it seems silly to buy a toy lens. I stuck this on my 7D. Yes, a £1200 camera with a £20 toy lens - one element in one group! It has chromatic aberrations, heavy vingetting and astigmatism. You won't get perfect images with this lens. But that's the point. It makes you think creatively around the problems of the lens (a fixed focal length 60mm, and a manual focus that has 4 options - all bad!). It makes you think like a photographer rather than someone who shoots thousands of images on a DSLR in the hope of getting one right. While an undoubtably an amusing tale, this book is not without a lot of poetic licence. Having seen a number of the described re-enactment societies in the flesh, and participated in a number myself, I can categorically state that the author is talking a load of crap.

Though aimed at the history enthusiast like other 'Objects in Focus' titles rather than academics, this slim volume packs in a surprising amount of detail. The book details the wider context of this incredible Viking silver hoard found near Harrogate, probably buried during the eventful reign of Athelstan. The accompanying photos allow readers a museum level of detail, and it also contains photo-cameo's from other famous hoards in the BM such as the Cuerdale Hoard. It goes onto explain the systems and importance of silver wealth in the Viking age while exploring items of note in the hoard, where a narrative develops.
