One from the Vault ~ Grateful Dead
One from the Vault ~ Grateful Dead
I'm not a Grateful Dead fan. Most of their music, that I've listened to, is not to my taste however this is one of the best live albums I've heard since I started listening to live albums in 1972. I don't like live albums to be messed with (an assortment of best of from different shows with the warts removed). This particular 'One from the vault' is a one show, press play warts and all, except there are no warts. The quality of the recording is outstanding and the musicianship is from another planet. GD live are typically a slow burner to start with, in my opinion, however once they've warmed up they are red hot and as tight as those who are asking silly money for some of their albums (I… Read more

This album works so well for me because of its powerful simplicity. There's a refreshing lack of complexity in every track. Simple chord structures, bass lines, organ and drums. No surprise that it was recorded lock, stock and barrel in 11 days. The production is crystal clear thus suiting my taste perfectly. A previous reviewer suggested that it might appeal to those who like The Velvet Underground and Hawkwind. I agree, every time I play it I think of VU and ironically I'm not a big fan however I'm thinking I ought to revisit their music.
The CD sleeve is all paper (card). No plastic, which is a good thing imo however the inner sleeve is difficult to remove from the outer sleeve. A… Read more

A slightly more sedate offering this time from Colourmusic and I'm not sure at this stage, having heard it 3 times, whether or not it moves me as much as My__is Pink, an album that picks me up by the ears, performs a non invasive sonic removal leaving me wax free.
I'm an old rocker and have much respect for the way Jimmy Page built layer upon layer of guitar tracks to produce that beautifully original Led Zeppelin sound. Colourmusic do the same in a more ' post rock' contemporary way. There's so much going on in their music and I'm converted. I can't imagine ever getting bored with their tunes. Clever stuff in an age when it's difficult to bring originality to the table. An audio… Read more
