Johannes Cabal: The Fear Institute (Johannes Cabal&hellip by Jonathan L. Howard
4.0 out of 5 stars A good read, 23 Jan 2013
I picked up this book knowing nothing about it, not even that it was the third book in the Johannes Cabal series. If I had known, I probably wouldn't have bought it as I like to start a series with the first book, however I am glad that I was ignorant as the bookshop didn't stock the other titles and I might have missed out on being introduced to the titular necromancer.

In this book Johannes Cabal, a selfish unfriendly necromancer, is hired to lead a party into the Dreamlands - a world that was dreamed into existance but isn't actually a dream - to find and destroy the Phobic Animus, or the originator of all fears.

I found the first half of the book interesting enough. I loved the chapters where Brimstone, the Wishmonger Chimera, appeared. In fact, any of the… Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Very disturbing, 9 Sep 2008
I don't usually read horror or dark fantasy novels, but as soon as I picked this up I couldn't put it down. It is a romance story really, with a very dark twist. I found it disturbing, but absorbing. The fantasy world it is set in is very well depicted and I would like to learn more about it - especially the 'Lions' that feature in this book.
