All of the stories in this collection are excellent. They all show the mark of a great author in that the language while not being complex conveys many different layers and complexions. I find it quite hard to convey in words how marvellous and utterly sublime Nemirovsky's writing is, but I would urge any reader who treasures fine writing and excellent story telling to give this book a read.

OK, only 67% through this one but I love it already. The book consists of small thoughts on every aspect of life and while some are those thoughts that everyone thinks, others are truely unique - loveable, honest and laugh out loud funny. Would thoroughly recommend, a marvellous book.

I came across these novels by accident but am very pleased that I did as they are excellent. I hadn't heard of David Barrie before but now consider him a writer with a bright future in this genre. The novels are all set in Paris and feature Franck Guerin of the Brigade Criminelle. The character of Franck is well drawn and believable and Franck's back-story is also interesting and provides room for further exploration in later novels. The descriptions of Paris are also very well described but do not get in the way of the stories - in that the reader does not need to know the city to be able to enjoy the stories.
