I love Mr Barnard's books, but this for me wasn't one of his best.

It was entertaining, maybe more of a political satire than a whodunnit, alnd Mr Barnard continues to impress with his stories set against so many different backgrounds.

Not the best place to start if you haven't read his books before but still money well spent.

This may well be the worst book I have ever (partly) read.

It started off OK with a locked room death, but within pages descended into badly written nonsense.

I kept reading for a while, thinking this must be a short story collection, each one about a different murder within the walls of the Metro Star hotel: there was certainly no way the story I was reading would sustain a full-length novel, so I might as well finish it.

When I realised I had begun flashing through the pages barely reading them, I thought I'd better take a quick look at the contents page to see how many pages of torture story one had left to inflict before I could abandon the whole sorry… Read more

I love Lawrence Block's Burglar series of novels and remembered his name from reading the Ellery Queen/Alfred Hitchcock short story magazines a good few years back.

I bought this and was staggered at how prolific Mr Block is. This is a huge book. And yet halfway through I still managed to lose it even in our tiny house!

So I had to buy it again. I think this was the first book I ever bought for the Kindle app (I was still unconvinced and so it had been freebies until then). And it was this purchase that persuaded me that Kindle had a purpose. You can't carry around a book this size, and it would take a chunk out of your baggage allowance as a holiday read… Read more
