The Good Plain Cook by Bethan Roberts
The Good Plain Cook by Bethan Roberts

I thoroughly enjoyed Bethan Roberts's second novel (also check out her startling debut "The Pools" for an unsettling portrait of Middle England in meltdown that practically hums with menace). The Good Plain Cook is set during a summer in 1930's Sussex and centres on Kitty, the titular cook and her employment at the house of some champagne socialist bohemians. As an evocation of place and time it's nigh-on flawless and the heat of the summer radiates through the pages, leading to a languid and very satisfying read.
