Beethoven: Complete Symphonies ~ Ludwig van Beethoven
Beethoven: Complete Symphonies ~ Ludwig van Beethoven

Everyone needs a Norrington take on Beethoven - especially at such a low price. I grew up on Karajan Beethoven - it nearly killed me off Ludwig for life. Dull, portentous, self important and slow. Unfortunately, most conductors still seem to believe that this is the only way to approach Beethoven. Even the Harnoncourt set suffers this - especially his 9th. Norrington, however, brings Beethoven to life - especially Beethoven the humourist, the imaginative. While this means that the 3rd, 5th and 7th come off a bit light, it means that 2, 4, 6, 8 and most of the 9th are simply glorious. As long as you don't come to these with some idea that Beethoven's music is some sacrosanct "great"… Read more
Rachmaninov: Piano Concertos ~ stephen Hough

Many people have recordings of these concertos. Even favourite ones they play again and again until they know the pieces backwards. This set, however, reveals new details and complexities in each concerto like no other. Play this set on headphones - you will hear what glories Hough reveals to us. He also, however, manages to present these concertos on a suitably grand scale. A remarkable, astonishing achievement.
Medtner: Piano Sonatas & Forgotten Melodies ~ Nikolay Medtner

Tozer live is a fantastic experience - he has a magical tone that goes beyond a flawless technique. That magic is transferred to these pieces, which are providing for me a complex journey of listening. There is a similarity to Rachmaninov, however, it is not as flashy. There is also a similarity to Brahms - this music has Brahms' subtlety and shimmering late afternoon glow. Tozer's attention to detail and willingness to swim inside the notes comes out in this recording. The Medtner set has been a long labour of love for Tozer, and this is clear. The great price also makes this set a winner.
