2.0 out of 5 stars One variation too far!, 20 April 2014
For me this story was although well paced and well written, it was not believable and more importantly the characters that I know and love became, dare I say it, unlikeable. Without give away the plot it starts with Elizabeth making a crucially stupid decision and then spending the whole of the book living the consequences of that dreadful decision. The wonderful Elizabeth becomes someone who is stubbornly stupid, then pitiable, and finally frankly irritating. This is not how I ever want to see the wonderfully almost perfect heroine, Elizabeth, and I have read countless variations. I was a little sceptical at first as it was very little money to buy. However I have been quite impressed. It starts after the first proposal. Darcy is devastated and Elizabeth a little regretful. Instead of meeting again in Pemberley, they meet instead in Paris, and there starts their adventure, firstly to escape France, as a war has been declared and then to hide the secret of their relationship once they arrive home. Darcy and Elizabeth's relationship is deeply passionate without being too explicit, Wickham is even more dastardly than in the original and the less said about Lady Catherine, the better. I have never read anything by this author before and so I was not expecting much, but the storyline was better than other 'Elizabeth as a governess' what ifs. It was a complete story from the disastrous proposal to her becoming. governess, Darcy was wonderful as always, although a little 'soft at times'. Elizabeth was a strong as I expected her to be. Bingley finally gave his sister the comeuppance she deserved and Georgiana and Anne even managed to have decent story lines.
