The Shepherd by Frederick Forsyth
The Shepherd by Frederick Forsyth
I read and loved this story in paperback years ago but my copy is in someone's attic and probably lost forever so I finally replaced it with the Kindle version. OK, it's only a shortish story but it carries the atmosphere and tension that graces many full length books, so don't let this deter you. It still haunts me years later...
Piece of Cake (R.A.F. Quartet) by Derek Robinson
Piece of Cake (R.A.F. Quartet) by Derek Robinson
WW2 fiction is not a genre I generally read, rather than actual historical stuff which I do read occasionally, however... but this is crackin'. Set in France in the Phoney War (I've only reached the middle of the book so far) where the author brilliantly captures the freewheeling and slightly manic spirit of a squadron of Hurricane pilots who live in the knowledge that flying Hurricanes was never going to come with a guaranteed return ticket, neither is contact with the enemy. 5.0 out of 5 stars Wednesday is here..., 21 July 2014
I seem to remember that's when the Eagle used to get delivered every week, a joyous day when everything became possible and Dan Dare was seriously heroic. Mr Nuttall is too young to remember that but I bet he's got his dad's copies up in the attic.
Great stuff, proper ripping yarn time. Stuff probability, who needs it, we know the Royal Navy will win in the end. They always do. Just ask the Spanish armada, the Graf Spee and many a greater foe.

With this book an unexpected social angle emerges... Britain is ruled by a monarchistic aristocracy in x-ty years in the future. Ummm... how on earth did that happen? Probability becomes well stuffed at this point but who knows???
