Alain Danielou was a remarkable man, who lived in remarkable times and intimately knew remarkable people. This book is an endless stream of surprises, full of insights, wit and a delightfully Gallic nonchalance. Danielou recounts his journey from a bourgeois, strictly Catholic, Breton upbringing, to the hedonism of Paris in the twenties, and then on to his astonishing life in India, where he and his lover eventually became a fully initiated Shaivites, and lived in a crumbling, haunted palace on the banks of the Ganges.
