I am absolutely amazed that anyone could give this issue a 3 star rating. Maria Callas is now generally acknowledged to have been the greatest operatic soprano of the 20th Century and I was lucky enough to have seen her twice, once in this production of Tosca at Covent Garden. It is lamentable that so little of this great artists work survives on film and that is why this DVD is so valuable. Sure, the slightly grainy black and white and the camera work are very much of their time (1964) but the performance is so overwhelming that one can overlook these faults. Michael Wood is brave enough to take the necessary leap of imagination to bring all the mythical elements together and make real sense of them. Throughly researched, he provides common sense reasons for the cause of the Trojan war but at the same time the book is totally compelling and moving. It is also very well produced and illustrated.
