If you are interested in nlp, this book is well worth a read,
and the exercise is to put what you read into action as soon as possible,
If you merely read it consciously,you might get a lift in your positive thoughts for a day or so, but this will soon return to your default setting,
the idea is to tap into your unconscious (or others call sub-conscious)and adopt these ideas in your belief system and put into action in your life.
It is easier said and done though, as I have wavered in my own discipline and got some hit and miss results in changing my outlook to me more positive.
