Named after a computer entertainments system of yore, Anglo-American boy-girl duo Vic Twenty have been doing the 'circuit' (no pun intended) for quite a while. Now the nation is finally waking up to their unique brand of effervescent, yet contemplative, synth-pop.
This is an age where anything termed as ‘pop’ music is unfortunately categorized under the same bracket as flavourless, insipid bands cobbled together by fifty year old music business executives sporting grey suits and even greyer pony-tails. White Town is of course best remembered for that mind-blowing piece of pop genius that shot straight to number one back in 1997 - namely, "Your Woman". It was really quite an achievement. There was Jyoti Mishra, then a student from Derby, who having for years made introspective indie and lo-fi bedroom pop, found himself on Radio 1's A list, catching the imagination of entire nation. Fame, though, didn't last, and apart from the equally gorgeous follow up "Undressed" which just about scraped the Top 75, White Town is belongs to that select group of musical oddities tagged with the "One Hit Wonder" label.

With bands such as Coldplay, Doves, Travis and Elbow currently enjoying the heady heights of commercial success with well crafted, emotive rock music, the time for the Turin Brakes is very much now. Their first offering, "The Optimist LP", first alerted the world to a rich, blossoming talent - now Olly Knights and Gale Paradganian are just about in full bloom.
It is difficult to describe their music without somehow using both the words 'simple' and 'complex'. Their largely laid-back, fairly mellow style has straightforward, curiously addictive melodies, but the instrumentation, varying from acoustic reverie to intricate arrangements, evokes memories stretching from John Martyn circa… Read more
