Very few films manage to earn the reputation of being truly inconic masterworks of cinema, but that was exactly what was achieved by The Wizard Of Oz, a film that is still worshipped by film critics and fans more than seven decades after it was made. You can only imagine the pressure that director Sam Raimi must have been feeling when it camt time for him to direct this prequel.

As a director that first made his name in horror films, he may seem a strange choice at first, but in recent years he led the Spiderman franchise to global box office domination while producing a couple of entertaining popcorn films. On the surface The Descendants appears to be a film that is just barely hanging on to respectability: an absent father (George Clooney) suddenly finds himself having to care for his two daughters for the first time after his wife has an accident that puts her in a coma. A coma that she will never wake up from. It sounds like it could go one of two ways: either over-sentimental fluff or depressing tear-jerker. Both are bad options, but the good news is that director Alexander Payne manages to skillfully avoid both.
