This is a very complex book. There are two stories. One is set in Calcutta in the seventies and eighties, and England in the nineties. The other story is a rewriting of a Rabindranath novel, Ghare Bairey. The main character of the first story is writing this historical novel. The author makes us wait right until the end to show how the stories join but throughout there are resonances between the two stories. The writing is pure and clear and the main theme is both urgent and profound -- how does one make or find a place in the world? It is also a very moving and haunting book. I have never read anything like this before.
