Nineteen Eighty-Four by George Orwell
Nineteen Eighty-Four by George Orwell
4.0 out of 5 stars A deserved classic, 8 May 2014
This has been one of the most influential and discussed books of the 20th century and understandably so. George Orwell ably characteristics many political and social trends which have since developed seen most clearly in his commentary on surveillance culture.

As a story the book is interesting but not unparalleled as the plot can feel dry at times due to its philosophical narrative. I don't want to spoil the story so won't elaborate except to say that it's worth reading whether you're an academic or simply wanting a good novel but those in the second group should not expect a thriller but rather a slow paced novel.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great strategy game, 30 April 2014
I bought this game as alternative to Settlers of Catan and haven't been disappointed. It's principally a strategy game based on tile placement. 2-4 players can play and it takes around 45mins per game.

The game rules are fairly straightforward making it accessible to most people, more so than settlers. This has the added bonus that you don't need to spend ages explaining before you even play.

The price is slightly expensive in my opinion for what you get but overall it's worth a try for any strategy board game fans.
Long Walk To Freedom (Abacus 40th Anniversary) by Nelson Mandela
A classic in its own right this book is a fascinating account of one of the most important figures in the 20th century. This biography is interesting both for its interpretation of the recent history of South Africa but also for the deep personal insights into the person of Mandela.

I read this book as an academic resource but it is written in such a readable way full of personal anecdotes that it's accessible to most readers. The biography covers all of Mandela 's life from childhood right through to his presidential inauguration tracing the development of his character and ideology. It gives a clear primary account of what role Mandela played in the forming of the Youth wing of… Read more
