The Horologicon by Mark Forsyth
The Horologicon by Mark Forsyth
4.0 out of 5 stars Great Fun, 22 Feb 2013
Words, what they mean and where they come from can be great fun. Forsyth's book is perfect for reading on journeys or for those moments when an escape from seriousness while still exercising the mind is needed.
The Stages in the Social History of Capitalism by Henri Pirenne
5.0 out of 5 stars A ClassicLecture, 22 Feb 2013
Hemri Pirenne is one of the great scholars in the history of urbanism and the development of the city. In this short work he clearly shows his view of capitalism as a force working within societies and not the reason for them.
A Dictionary of Urdu, Classical Hindi and English by John T. Platts
It is usual for academics to concentrate on the most recent editions of dictionaries but Platt's dictionary of 1904 is a must for anyone interested in 19th century Urdu literature and its development throughout the 20th century. It gives a snapshot of a major world language at a particular period of time and should be considered as important a work as Lane's 'Lexicon' is to English speaking students of classical Arabic. It is a readable, comprehensible and very affordable must buy for anyone with the slightest interest in Indo-European languages for which we are indebted to Manohar its republishers.
