This is ok but nothing special.
This isn't a bad book but I expect better from Parker.
This is a simple story following a small group of characters with a background of more complex politics, that is pretty standard for the author but the book lacks the originality of his other novels.
This really feels like it should be a reissue of an older novel, one written before the author became successful and before they became really good. The fact that it isn't a reissue makes it hard to understand why it lacks the depth and sophistication of his normal novels and the characters are more forgettable, just bland stock characters.

The plot seems promising but this book is a dreary slog.
Any excitement is subsumed in banality and the author seems so impressed with the quality of his writing that he buries the story in long-winded monologues and descriptions.
The characters are neither interesting nor likeable, the interesting point should be their talents but the book spends little time on that, instead giving a meandering history of India mixed with childish peeves and sulks.
There is endless foreshadowing of important events to come, as if these teasers should be enough to keep you reading while the book plods along with nothing happening for page after page.

This is a wonderful mixture of science and religion.
We see quite believable human behaviour where given the choice to use or share high technology those in charge decide to use it make themselves gods and hold the rest of mankind at a low-tech stage where they can be easily ruled by superstition.
The majority of the book is the previous war against the gods, we have no doubt as to its conclusion but it is interesting to see it develop and watch the events and personalities involved.
Sam is likeable as are several of the other characters and everyone's motivation is understandable and believable whether for fanatical or cynical reasons.
