I watched the Elizabeth Taylor version when I was a very young girl and for many years after, cherished romantic fantasies of Ivanhoe. Some forty years later, I have been seduced by all the rave reviews into buying this mini series and find all my romantic illusions shattered!
This production is a blow by bloody blow interpretation of the novel, sparing no opportunity to thrust cruelty and gore in the viewer's face. Lengthy scenes of torture, such as a slowly roasting Jew, are shown in sickening detail with nothing left to the imagination.
