Great debut album with a real raw garage blues rock sound. Think White Stripes mixed with some Jim Jones Review and a dash of AC/DC. This is a very good thing.
The Grim Company (The Grim Company 1) by Luke Scull
Overall I enjoyed this first novel immensely but it did read a lot of the time as fan fiction, particularly of Joe Abercrombie and Glen Cook. That's fine and laudable but it meant that the story, or the characters in it, never pull up any trees with originality.

It's very funny in places, with some empathetic characters and most of the action scenes are very good but you do feel like you have read it all before.

I will read the sequels as light reading as it was enjoyable, but I'm not expecting to be stunned by them. 3.5*

I read the whole Broken Empire trilogy as a block and one thing you could really tell was the confidence the author gained over the novels. If anything this volume may be the weakest of the three in terms of the actual story but the mechanics of how it's told are stunning.

As the story unfolds you begin go see how broken the world is, with the cracks only appearing to become wider. The twist of third party intervention (trying not to give away spoilers) was a very interesting one, really contrasting the two worlds.
