I'ts no easy feat balancing a historical context, while keeping a story human and engaging, especially considering the age group it's intended for, however the author has managed this with utter grace.
The choice of presenting it as a diary is very effective, you get a real sense of Matilda's voice and personality, every word and line drips with character, with Matilda's acute and often humorous, visual observations of Tudor life and small moments.
