Classic early Seuss; a voyage of the improbable with a snowballing imagination and an unlikely crisis as shipmates, resolved in a kindly and effortless manner.

The film is shot through with a latent sense of foreboding doom, relieved by grittily expressive camerawork and post production. It seemed to be on the verge of becoming more meaningful, but isn't quite ambitious enough to transcend the formula. There's a critical Christian undercurrent; ideas of regret and repentance are addressed; a struggle to make sense of a brutal world, with the only tools and experience available ie. more brutality. Apocalypse Now, or The New World comes to mind, Ridley Scott or Kurasowa at times, but strangely also Waiting for Godot, because occasionally there is some odd anachronistic dialogue that almost tips the film into farce. A meticulous cameo of a reunion between old friends, that jogs along to a great soundtrack and fantastic scenery. Dialogue is sparse, but conveys the changing moods between them, the misfires of communication and where flawed common ground might still be glimpsed. Their lives are as different as can be possible, but If they come to a shared realisation that they have grown apart, this journey is their farewell, a tip of their hat to their past .
The film itself is a gem. The ambience of the experience is embellished by wonderful sounds from nature and the laid back yo la tengo soundtrack, by the time the journey reaches the springs you feel like sharing a beer in one of the hot tubs… Read more
