I am an avid Flashman fan and thought I would give this a go on the off chance it was good.
As a book it is fine, if a little Bravo Two Zero in its namedropping of army phrases and kit. But it is not a Flashman book, nor should it preted to be. Dropping in a bit about shirking and a spot of luck with the ladies, does not a Flashman make. The lead character lacks flair, style and carisma; perhaps it is a little too close to the real person, who knows.
The language just feels wrong and too bothered about the minutie, there is no feeling that he is at the very centre of historical moments that you find in the FLashman books. it lacks the colourfal cast of supporting characters and… Read more
