As stated in the preface to this book, "This book describes NLG, which is a subfield of AI and CL that is concerned with building computer software systems that can produce meaningful texts in English or other human languages from some underlying information", and this is exactly what it does.

The heart of the book is contained in three chapters: 4) Document Planning, 5) Microplanning, and 6) Surface Realisation. It is in these three steps that the NLG pipeline is (usually) divided into. The book was a short but strong read. It contained very important points about human nature and gender. If there was a list of 100 books that we must read in our lives, I'd put this one on that list.
