The Deep [DVD] DVD ~ ”lafur Darri ”lafsson
The Deep [DVD] DVD ~ ”lafur Darri ”lafsson
Having "lived the life" as a fisherman on the same type of boat and in the same community, I can vouch for the realism in The Deep. Baltazar Kormákur is Iceland's premier film director and this film shows exactly why.

Based on a true story (with virtually nothing fictionalised) and with locals as "extras" for the filming, this production cannot be beaten as far as reality is concerned. Every moment is faithfully recorded and we wait with bated breath for the drama to unfold.

I never thought I'd want to see a political thriller, but this pot-boiler keeps me riveted to my seat every step of the way. Totally believable plot lines reflect totally believable characters in a labyrinthian chase through the corridors of power and domestic life.

A great mix of real-time politics, journalism and the manipulative inputs of the protagonists of both those professions: spin, sycophantism, misguided loyalty, betrayal, exploitation and other shabby, but expected, behaviour. A magnifying mirror on our own society if we were to open our eyes.
Young Montalbano [DVD] DVD ~ Michele Riondino
Young Montalbano [DVD] DVD ~ Michele Riondino
The "Old" Montalbano is not let down by this prequel to the supposedly later stories. This series shows the Sicilian detective in his earlier days, as he sets out to make his mark in his home-town police department. The cast to be seen in the later series is gradually introduced and have the same characterisations... a nice touch.

Beautifully set in the less well known parts of Sicily, and with the obligatory mealtime scenes that make me want to reach for the travel brochures, the stories are excellently plotted and surprisingly human.
