This book is an excelent read, based in Viking times. It begins with a girl of around 16 named Ran after the goddess of the sea. She lives with her mother and grandmother, and she waits in hope for the day her father returns with her two brothers from over the sea.
Then one day a stranger arrives, and he tells her mother that her husband has been dead for a long time, and stays a while. Her mother is very taken with him, and it turns out they were lovers once.
When they go to another village for the Allfather celebrations, her whole life changes.
Now her life is in the hands of a cruel magician, her fate in the hands of a vile stranger and her destiny in the love of a… Read more

This book has it all; action, adventure, and a bit of romance. Kel is brilliant, and so is her new Knight Master...not saying who!
Kel has loads of adventures in this book, and does all sorts, including jousting and falling in love with...a certain someone. Will she be able to pass the Ordeal of Knighthood and finally become a knight of the realm? What lies in store for her in the next action-packed four years of her life? Find out and read this book - you just have to - it's amazing. It's also more substantial, so there's lots to read. You won't be alble to put it down, trust me!

5.0 out of 5 stars Better and better!, 5 Oct 2001
The Protector of the Small series just gets better and better, and this is an excellent read. There are more new characters including a dog called Jump and Kel's new maid Lalasa. Kel is getting on fine, but just as she is ready for her big examinations, her enemies choose to strike...
Will she be able to pass the tests and finally become a Squire? Has Joren really changed or is it just an act?
Find out - read it.
