Something For The Rest Of Us ~ Goo Goo Dolls

Having been a fan of this band since 1995's 'A Boy Named Goo', I have seen them go through many musical changes. Their swift movement into producing softer, more mainstream music was surprising but the quality of songwriting remained excellent so I bought every new album that came along, enjoying the many highlights on each of them.

Only 'Let Love In' was a true disappointment. Upon it's release in 2006 I really thought the band had lost their way. The song is sure to please dedicated Quo fans and casual listeners alike. This is a return to the Quo sound of old. Beginning Of The End could easily have been written in the Whatever You Want era.

It's an excellent hard rock song with faultless production, heavy and loud with guitars right up in the mix where they should be. It is also very catchy. I've been walking around with this song in my head since the first time I heard it.

If you liked the stuff on Heavy Traffic you'll really love this. Well done Quo!

The album is nothing if not varied, and sometimes it works. There is a mixture of pop, rock and some country-esque sounds. Where the album goes mostly wrong are the numbers NOT written by Quo, instead written by John David. These are title track and lead single 'Party Ain't Over Yet' and 'All That Counts Is Love'. Both these songs sound almost identical but neither are very good; I wouldn't mind the middle-of-the-road style too much if the melodies were catchy, unfortunately they are plain boring… Read more
