This book is the story of Edward Stobart, whose father used to hire himself and his horse and cart to Cumberland Council for 27 shillings and sixpence a day, and is now probably the best know haulier in the world. A working class lad who suffered with a speech impediment and a less than average school record decided he loved the haulage business and with his combination of vision, risk taking and hard work made himself into a successful businessman. I found this biography, of such a decent, honest man, an inspiring read.

After reading "Dracula" I found myself wondering how a Dublin born, theatre worker wrote a book in 1897 about a blood sucking monster from Transylvania wreaking havoc in Victorian London. The answers are all here in Elizabeth Miller's well researched work. The influences of Lord Byron, John Polidori, Sir Henry Irving and Jack the Ripper are all discussed. The connection between the Count and Vlad Tepes, why so many variations in vampire folklore have evolved and just how the word Nosferatu has it's origin in the misunderstanding of the Scottish wife of a Hungarian calvalry officer make this a fascinating book. The tale of Robinson Crusoe is so engrained in our culture I found it difficult to be objective about it. All the classic ingredients are there, the journey to find one's fortune the shipwreck, the fight for survival and the conversations with God. It is easy to see why it has survived in print for so long although I found so much of the book rather dull. This particular edition has an introduction which I found to be very useful in putting the novel into context and a series of explanatory notes which I found essential for understanding the language of the time. Should you be going to buy a copy of this I think these additions make this an excellent choice.
