Tourettes is a serious illness, and one which Lavie Tidhar writes about very affectionately in this sweet little YA-story superbly illustrated by Paul McCaffery. Yes, it is expensive for a slim volume but the House of Murky Depths is a tiny publisher without the funds for a print run in the thousands upon thousands.

I do not write critiques of individual stories within a single-author collection since I believe the collection should stand has a single piece of work much like a novel.

Colin Leslie's review very much echoes my own sentiments: an incredibly strong collection, with definite nods to Thomas Ligoti and Mark Samuels, but I'd also like to say that there is more than a passing reference to J G Ballard. Jones - like Ballard - takes the sf and horror tropes to produce stories that aren't quintessentially sf or horror. There's an otherworldly-ness to the tales but they feel quite "real".

All Your Gods are Dead by Gary McMahon
I published McMahon's debut short novel - Rough Cut - so yes, I am biased: I like the guy's writing - but AYGaD is just has good; a more disturbing tale, with less emphasis on the supernatural.

If you've lost faith in horror fiction then I'd suggest you check out Mr McMahon along with the author who wrote the introduction, Mark Samuels.

You won't be disappointed.
