Flying by Henry Sutton
Flying by Henry Sutton
Fine story, if you like sexual-hothouse narratives. They're really not for me, and it wasn't remotely clear from the available info that that's what I was buying. On the 'good/bad writing' side, Sutton describes the cockpit with apparent detailed knowledge, but he won't share his knowledge with the reader. Dropping in an alphabet soup of acronyms - VOR, MFD, DME, all the bit - fine if you happen to know what they mean, but, if you don't, it is in my view bloody bad manners to keep the reader in the dark.
Darkness and Light: (Frank Elder) by John Harvey

Well up to the standard we've come to expect from Harvey. Some Harvey fans, I realise, don't like Elder (the detective hero), but I do. Elder is a character of greater depth and complexity than some others Harvey has created. Let's have more featuring this detective!
The Xenophobe's Guide to the Poles (Xenophobe's Gu&hellip by Ewa Lipniacka

Not quite as side-splitting as the blurb suggests, but written with sympathy and depth of knowledge. Failed to alter my (highly positive) view of the Polish people.
