A departure from the Jack Haldean series and it is good to see this author stretching her wings in slightly different directions. This time it is not the twenties, but England of the Great War era and the threats and complexities of German espionage. This is a well trodden area (e.g. Buchan, Ambler, Household - and less seriously, Sapper and Charteris) and while obviously there are similarities to these classics, in no way can "Frankie's Letter" be dubbed a pastiche or merely derivative. I cannot get enough of this and play it incessantly! The voice is exquisite: Alfred Deller, James Bowman, Cecilia Bartolli, Ferrier and Baker all rolled into one - and then some! But it isn't just the tone or timbre of the voice that seduces, but the sparkling interpretation and delivery. What silky lyricism, what vibrant verve! Can't wait to discover more of this artist.
One of the most haunting and graphic accounts of the Civil War I have encountered. Brilliant photographs, fascinating documentaion and eloquently spoken commentaries. This is a DVD to keep!
