This expertly directed and brilliantly acted Romanian drama gives us a new addition to the cinematic pantheon of overbearing bourgeois mothers. Luminia Gheorghiu is fantastic in the central role of Cornelia, a well-off middle class woman used to getting what she wants who finds controlling her son's life more challenging once he's facing jail for killing a child by reckless driving.

This utterly engrossing drama won the Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival, and Cornelia is undoubtedly one of the most interesting, scary and driven characters in recent cinema. This fantastic film rather went under the radar on its low key UK release but received great reviews, notably from Sight & Sound, which highlighted Van Groningen's romantic epic as a film of the month. Beautifully directed, with constantly gliding camera movements matching the ebb and flow of Elise and Didier's ill-fated love affair, this is a film which miraculously avoids sentimentality and earns its emotional punch through the weight of the story and the stunning performances from the two leads.
