5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent read, 24 July 2007
An excellent read. Christopher Tolkien has done sterling work here. The joins between passages written sometimes,(something like), 30 years apart are usually imperceptible, and the whole reads as a vast, romantic legend, more personal than the Silmarillion, but still in the tone of an Oral Tradition.
This tone will undoubtedly put some people off, but to me, it gives a nice authoritive feel to the piece. Fans of happy endings probably should steer clear. This book has an uhappy begining, middle and end, (although there are a few more upbeat moments), but it's all the more worthy for it!
