Pro Cembalo Pleno-Bach on the Pedal Harpsichord ~ Douglais Amrine

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, 13 Jun 2012
Recordings of the pedal harpsichord are rare and it is a pity that such an opportunity should fall so flat. The pedal playing appears as an unhelpful adjunct to the manuals, contributing only a series of graceless "plunks". Yves Rechsteiner on Alpha shows how it should be done.

5.0 out of 5 stars A rare treat, 13 Jun 2012
Recordings of the pedal harpsichord are as rare as the instruments themselves and not always successful. Possibly nothing will ever quite compare to E. Power Biggs' recording on a Challis instrument that was probably the most complex harpsichord ever built. Rechsteiner plays a more conventional 8' 8' 4' double on a 16' 16' 8' pedal. I have been more familiar with Rechsteiner as a nimble fingered (and footed) organist with a style that tends to the thrilling without ever losing the musicality. I am delighted to find that he is no less effective on the pedal harpsichord. Everything in this recording is enjoyable and some tracks (e.g. the BWV912 toccata) are breathtaking.

One has to marvel at how music as wonderful as this could have been overlooked for so long. Working in the shadow of Händel seems to be the only reasonable explanation although I prefer these works to Händel's own keyboard suites (I have yet to hear Händel played with Mitzi Meyerson's incomparable panache, which is a major factor in the enjoyment of this recording).

A double disc of harpsichord music by a single composer might seem a daunting prospect (unless that composer is Bach) but this recording is full of variation. Credit for this must go to the composer and also to Mitzi Meyerson's creative choice of tempi and registration. Credit must also go to the… Read more
