This is a somewhat lightweight prison movie which owes much to more successful versions of the genre: San Quentin, White Heat, Each Dawn I Die. Glenn Ford lacks plausibility as the innocent victim of the US judicial system, while Broderick Crawford as the warden is perhaps more successful than he was as the hospital surgeon in "Not as a Stranger". For comparison compare Ford's reaction to news of his father's death with Cagney's reaction to the news of his mother's death in "White Heat". No comparison at all. Ford does bring a sense of vulnerability, just as he did later in "Blackboard Jungle". But any prison film needs a Cagney or Bogart to bring it to life. The… Read more
