This book sets out to chart the history of the UK in the Eurovision Song Contest. Up until 2011, the British entry for the Eurovision Song Contest had been selected, at least in part, in the course of a televised public contest. Despite various formats for this selection over the years, the process has generally been dubbed A Song for Europe".

The United Kingdom did not take part in the very first Eurovision Song Contest, and this book explains the reason. The production of the Eurovision Song Contest in Russia in 2009 ranks as the most expensive in the history of the contest. A major piece of the budget must have been swallowed up by the stage design, which in terms of size and technology put everything that had come before it in the shade. This book is a personal record of one man's fight to get that mammoth stage build and operating as the designers and director's intended. He ended up with a nervous break-down and put his experiences on paper as part of the recovery process.
