I'm generally a Peter F Hamilton fan, and have read all but one of his novels, but I was very disappointed by Great North Road. Almost all of the ideas and themes in this book (instantaneous travel, rejuvenation, redemption, noir-ish detective subplots) have been covered extensively in his other books.

Hamilton's habit of making his heroines forever-young and hyper-sexualised is also wearing a bit thin. I'm not sure who Hamilton is trying to appeal to with this, but it's starting to feel a bit dirty-old-man-ish.

My biggest criticism of the book is that the principal villain seems to be a very obvious knockoff of The Shrike from the amazing Hyperion by Dan Simmons. If… Read more
