This three-part real crime drama about the murderer Malcolm Webster had impressive credentials to recommend it, even before it was transmitted & the jaw-dropping, grim true story hooked viewers in (and increased its audience over the three episodes) The assured quality attached to the programme from the start was its producer/co-writer Jeff Pope and its lead actor Reece Shearsmith.

Pope has produced several admirably unsensational and sensitively handled true crime dramas on notorious murderers - `This is Personal:The Hunt for the Yorkshire Ripper', `See No Evil:The Moors Murders' & `Appropriate Adult', about Fred & Rose West. `Inside No 9' comes from the brilliant imaginations of Reece Shearsmith and Steve Pemberton. The pair are touched by genius & have been responsible for some of the best British television (`The League of Gentlemen' & `Psychoville') of the last 20 years.

With admirable breadth and depth, they are all very different in feel, tone… Read more

The Halloween Special was a much anticipated viewing event for Psychoville fans when it was broadcast on BBC2 in October 2010, a perfect piece of `appointment television' for Halloween night.

The Gothic, so important to Psychoville's distinctive flavour across both series, is the narrative driving force here.

The abandoned, dilapidated former Ravenhill Psychiatric Hospital, full of foreboding shadows & empty, echoing rooms in the middle of the night, is the perfect gothic set up. The Special's main protagonists are Drew, a fragile, damaged young man and Phil Walker, a TV locations manager for a `Most Haunted' style TV show, who is doing a recce of Ravenhill. Drew grew… Read more
