Hoffman, Olivier and Scheider all give excellent performances in this fast action movie written for people with brains still employed. Proof that you can have a good narrative; cultural references (McCarthyism,Nazis in hiding)and drama without descending to the banal. Olivier goes slightly over the top as the Mengele character (the scene where his Nazi dentist tortures the young Jewish Hoffman with his drill will put you off dentistry for life). Hoffman is at his best reprising his "Graduate" character - the young Jewish New Yorker with angst. Excellent support from Scheider as his shady older brother.

Brilliant recreation of Arnold Bennett's comic novel of late 19th century Potteries life (Stoke-on-Trent etc) and the workers' seaside antics in North Wales - where many still go on vacation. Guinness plays Denry Machin - the cheeky, clever son of a washerwoman who finds love and fortune (not in that order) in a story full of adventure and warmth. Good supporting cast includes Glynis Johns and (a very young) Petula Clark. Like most of Bennett's Potteries novels it's partly biographical and partly unfulfilled dream.
Communicating the Infinite: Emergence of the Habad&hellip by Loewenthal

Dr Loewenthal's impressive and impeccable research has uncovered the true origins of the missionary zeal in the Lubavitch-Habad school of Hassidism. Much to the surprise of many (including this reviewer) the mission to other Jews did NOT start with the founder of Habad (Rabbi Schneor Zalman of Liady - the Alter Rebbe) but with his son and successor, Rabbi Dov Ber (the Mittler Rebbe). Not only that but it caused a schism within the Alter Rebbe's hassidim with many of the older generation succeeding from the movement. A fascinating read for someone looking for an intellectual treatment of the origins of Habad.
