Hannah (The Hawthorne Sisters Book 1) by Ava Catori
The third person writing did not sit comfortably with me; it felt like the writer was desperate to write both main characters in first person but didn't have the skills to do so. The story had little depth because of this, and didn't engage me at all. I persevered as I don't like to leave a book unfinished, but gave up after the proposal. Somehow, we were meant to believe that she agreed to spend the rest of her life with him, but that having sex at that point was 'too soon'. Fair enough if it was explained away as a religious choice, but it wasn't and just didn't seem true to life for me. I gave up at that point. 3.0 out of 5 stars so-so., 19 Aug 2013
I quite liked the story, but did want to give Maggie a shake. It could do with a good edit - at one point one of the characters who was at that moment several states away, popped up in a scene at the end of a chapter, only to 'arrive home' the next morning, which really annoyed me. This was the worst of the errors. The ex boyfriend character was either superfluous or not developed enough, I am not sure which....considering the starring role he had in the blurb on the amazon page. All in all, I enjoyed the story but the writing needed a good shake.

4.0 out of 5 stars a really great surprise, 27 July 2013
Loved this book. It was funny, poignant, sweet and heartwarming. The descriptions were great and I really believed JC's every word and thought. Two really interesting characters, and the last few pages had me cringing behind my hands in a good way. There were a couple of bits I would have done differently if I had had the imagination to write such a book in the first place, but they certainly didn't spoil my enjoyment. Well done Mark, will look out for your other work.
