I found this story to be one of the most engrossing that I've picked up for a long time. I don't usually read historical novels but this has made me want to read more of them! There is such utter bleakness in this book, but also moments of levity and real love between the motley band of people who come together by default to outrun the black death. The central subject of this book is the nature of truth, of hidden secrets and of moral and social destitution. Very happy to find this mug for my dad at Christmas. Jimmy Dimmock was his great uncle and I was so pleased to see his image as we only have one picture of him at home. Thanks so much from a family of Spurs fans!!

I am a lifelong supernatural fan, spurred on by watching series such as Shadows, Dramarama, The Ghosts of Motley Hall etc. (who remembers Dark Towers in school too??)
My 4 year old and 6 year old love these stories and they are very gently creepy. They demand a little patience to watch and are subtle and thoughtful. I wish to give my kids the gift of knowing real British drama with heart, and these are a good introduction despite their shortcomings. They provoke discussion, too. I especially found 'after school' poignant because the boys talk about the mining industry, which sadly died a death in Wales about 10 years later.
