Before listening to this album remember this. Nicky Wire thinks that this is one of the greatest albums of all time. Anyone who knows anything about this band knows that when the Wire is sure of himself then you are in for a belting wall of sound. And this is no exception.
Let me clear a few things up. Those Manics fans who only have "Everything Must Go" and/or "This Is My Truth...." and think that "The Holy Bible" is a celebration of the Manics' undying christian faith should really get in thier Mondeo's and drive off into the sunset; this album is not for you. In the climatic ether that was indie in 2000, this was the top tip for the greatest album of the year (bar Badly Drawn Boy). Critics and music fans loved it, but to me, wearing my humble hat, it was a watery effort that was not as good as other records of the same genre.
I find it hard to know where this stands on the music mantlepiece, my guess would be someone between Travis and Doves, but this album is not as good as either.
It has to be said that a lot of effort has gone into this, the songs are solid and the overall feel is good, but the direction of this record as an overall piece is confused and fragmanted.

Watching Later with Jools Holland recently (admitedly to see the rather dissapointing performance from Badly Drawn Boy)I was spellbound by this folk singer who just did the one song on the show. That was all it took though, I went out the following day and bought this album, and was stunned by the content.
Simple acoustic guitar and haunting vocals are beautifully combined with flanged and distorted orchestration, making this one tight and atmospheric recording.
Choice listening on this album has to be the ultimately melancholy "End of the World News (Dose Me Up)", bringing in the con of religion against the world as we know it. Also, the haunting… Read more
