In My Own Words:
I read a lot of books! Some are books that I come across in the library and pick up (with varied levels of success), some are new books by authors I already liked, some are recommended to me by Amazon because I liked another book and still others are Review Editions sent to me by publishers or distributors. I review for professional magazines (both printed and web) across several genres and it's a great opportunity to read something you might not otherwise choose. Sometimes there are some jewels amongst the dross!
I am quite a strict/harsh reviewer - after all, if we're spending hard-earned cash and cutting down trees we want to read something worthwhile! For example, I review a lot of historical novels for an online reviewing site and am VERY picky about them, particularly in terms of grammatical and historical accuracy. American authors writing books set in England, beware! I also review books for a couple of publications in the Christian Book trade and I have found that there are a lot of books being published that I don't think are good enough - and I say so! I also enjoy and review the sci-fi/fantasy genre for a website which can be very variable.
In pretty much every genre you will find that there are good books, mediocre books, terrible books, brilliant books; you can't tell just by looking at them (book covers generally are hopeless in helping you decide what the contents are like!) so you have to read them.
I hope that you'll find my reviews helpful in aiding you to decide whether to spend your money and your time in reading (or listening, or watching...)

This may be the first Allison Brennan book I've read but it became clear, as I progressed through it, that there have been other stories featuring some of the characters. Fortunately this didn't matter as I was given enough information as a new reader to follow the plot and to understand the relationships between various people, although some of the off-screen characters such as Duke and Jack felt very nebulous. The heroine of this story, Lucy Kincaid, was kidnapped and raped for online pornography. She ended up killing the rapist, his accomplice was imprisoned and Lucy moved on. Now, six years later, Lucy volunteers at a charity which helps to track down online… Read more

Tara Janzen seems to have a pretty efficient book-writing system as she has published several over the last few years in the Steele Street series, most of which I think I've read. Breaking Loose was the first that I was unable to finish. I gave up halfway, hoping to get some enthusiasm after a break, but whenever I picked the book up again I found my mind wandering. For this reader at least, the story took ages to get going. Suzi Toussi, our heroine, is sent out to Paraguay to authenticate and recover a Sphinx which has (supposedly) supernatural powers. But Suzi's not the only one after the relic - Dax Killian, whom she met several months before, is also tasked to get… Read more

This book has been sitting on my bedside table for almost two months with a bookmark in it halfway through. Perhaps I'd get back into reading the story, I thought, but whenever I picked it up I found myself putting it down again. Nope, I'd lost all interest in this book. So what was wrong? The blurb on the back made it sound exciting - Reilly Peterson attends Fantasy Spy Camp, a training course, finding herself attracted to fellow camper Van Keller. As you read the book there is some kind of a mystery and even a murder. This is meant to be a sassy, witty book in the mould of Janet Evanovich, but it turned into a damp squib. Some aspects were interesting, such as the… Read more
