It sounds like a film script, but it is true and brought to life as a personal account of his entire life in a scrapbook. It records his thoughts with personal mementos and photographs which add to the charm.

Of course it is fiction, to the extent that Walter Tull didn't keep a scrapbook. But his story is true.

The Somme by Lyn Macdonald
The Somme by Lyn Macdonald
I first bought this book when it came out in the 80s, and now I'm re-reading it again with just as much enjoyment. Lyn Macdonald's style of many personal recollections supported with military history is just as relevant now as it was then, and perhaps more so as all the accounts she relates are from people who will now have died from old age. It is brilliant that she took the time in the 70s and 80s to record their memories, so that we in 2013 and everyone who comes after us can read at first hand what people felt and endured at the time.
