This is awful. It sounds as if it has been designed by committee in a calculated bid to summon up images of China in the western mind, as imagined by a focus group. The entire CD strikes me as a calculated exercise in "targetted demographic appeal" or some such nonsense.
The very fact that the music critics of the mainstream press, -generally champions of the bland and middlebrow- have praised it should be warning enough. Kneejerk journalism such as: "Sa Dingding comes across as a Chinese Bjork or Kate Bush" (The Telegraph) is manifestly untrue, Sa Dingding comes across a lot more like the music for a shampoo advert and has NONE of those artists' originality or daring… Read more

This is a solo CD by longtime Neville Brothers guitarist Stoltz and it's a funky gem. He's a complete master of scratchy rhythm guitar, and capable of stinging solos as well, and is well supported by a wickedly tight band. The feel of the CD is very redolent of the funk side of the Nev's, though missing their fabulous voices. That doesn't matter though, as this is all about groove, and it has that in plenty. The only reason for not awarding 5 stars is that the songwriting is rather uneven in quality -the first five being oustandingly good.
Very highly recommended to anyone who likes snakey, sinuous, lubricious fonk!

I am no expert in Salsa, but to my ears this is a brilliant CD.
As the title suggests it features an all star cast, including Paquito D'Rivera and Tito Puente. It is mainly instrumental and entirely up tempo, with blistering horns, fantastic frantic percussion and short punchy solos and -as such- is very much dance rather than jazz oriented.
If you (like me) have a limited knowledge of latin music this is a really good place to start, it's has loads of oomph and is very accessible and enjoyable!
