I wish this guide had been around when I started my career. Quite rightly the first 3 chapters are about "soft" issues around people and motivation and not "how to do a SWOT analysis". Ann Francke introduces tried and tested theories and the book is well researched but it is not an academic tome. It is very easy to read and can be dipped into rather than read cover to cover. It would be as useful for owner/ managers as it would be for those on the corporate ladder and if every manager applied just one of the ideas in the book, the country's management expertise would improve significantly. Rather dated now, relies way too much on old data (I remember DEC but none of my students will) and pretty much exclusively uses American case studies. Too anecdotal and doesn't reflect sufficient academic rigour.
