5.0 out of 5 stars Strong but sad, 1 July 2009
There is something about this Elizabeth that invokes a sense of sadness, that she realises she is alone and can only rely on herself. You see her journey from girl to queen unfold with the confusion and uncertainty that runs alongside that. It was an inspired piece of casting with Blanchett as Elizabeth, as she updates our image of this amazing woman. Love the film, and the supporting cast help add to her performance as they give her something to react to.

Although I already knew about US involvement in the covert war, it was interesting to see it splashed onto screen - not sure how the US Govt feel about it as it shows them being dragged into helping via Wilson, et al, rather than being proactive about it! The cast do a great job at getting into the skin of the characters they portray. I feel the film portray's Wilson's frustrations very well. Having rented the film, it is one I do feel I would buy. However - along with several comments here - that UNICEF advert at the beginning is incredibly annnoying. Was staggered that could not fast forward it, skip it, or get to the Menu. Never come across that before and it really wound me up as had to… Read more

Having heard rave reviews about this film, was intrigued to watch it. Had read biographies of Howard Hughes, so had an expectation. Was very disappointed. It is always hard to portray a real-life person, but felt DiCaprio did not have the stature or gravitas to carry it off. Also thought too much emphasis was placed on OCD, which, although a key part of Hughes' life, seems to have dominated the film, whilst never explaining why it seems to be less prominant when attending the Committee Hearings. Hughes as the Aviator seemed to be overshadowed by the medical problems, which was a shame. I did feel that Blanchett, Alda and Baldwin were all good in their roles, but this was not enough to… Read more
