All My Puny Sorrows by Miriam Toews
All My Puny Sorrows by Miriam Toews
A very impressive novel but also a very depressing reading experience.

As we join Yolandi she is responding to a suicide attempt by her concert pianist older experience. Both are now in their 40s. Their father has already committed suicide some years previously. Yolandi reflects on the past, lives a somewhat chaotic life with children, mother, and so on as the family tries to cope. And she contemplates the future. Will her sister try again? Should she be prepared to help her. This is ths suspense the plot offers or at least the main suspense - other things do happen!

I came to this having read Jenny Offill's two novels and I also thought it looked interesting.

Jenny Offill's piece did not disappoint. It's about a friendship she temporarily developed at the age of 12 with a fundamentalist Christian based on spelling and spelling bees. She moves away, her mother's mental health fIrms up and the friendship dies away.

Overall the collection is perhaps a bit long - though some of its strength comes from its length and comprehensiveness. You can lose a friend in many ways. One is clearly to sleep yourself with you friend's boyfriend. Other troubles can arise through not liking your friend's boyfriend. Then there's failure by your friend… Read more
