Dressed to Kill: Virginia's Jazz Age Fashion by Daisy Bates

This book us a real treat . If you have ever passed the magical windows of the beautiful shop called Virginia in Portland Road not far from Holland Park, you will have wanted to take the whole experience away with you. Now if ever you could trap its butterfly fragility between the covers of a book, this is your chance to hold the escapist moment. I gave it for a Christmas present to people who never stop thanking me.
Shakespeare: staging the world by Jonathan Bate

This is not strictly an exhibition catalogue in the usual mould but it gives a better feel of how the world was perceived by people living at the time when Shakespeare's plays were performed than any catalogue I've ever seen.
It is a startling eye opener to how much was known about the world ; the collection of items displayed is breathtaking in its research and scholarship. Most of all it is so skilfully designed and beautifully presented that it is a treat to handle. I am only sorry that I did not invest in the hard back and I'm buying it for some really lucky people of taste this Christmas.
